VARSITY TECHNOLOGIES RECOGNIZED BY EPA FOR RENEWABLE GREEN POWER PURCHASE

Purchase Supports New Development of Clean Renewable Energy

San Francisco, CA (July 18, 2012) – Varsity Technologies (www.VarsityTechnologies.com), a provider of strategic IT services and solutions to schools and non-profits, announced today its purchase of green power and its partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Green Power Partnership. Varsity is purchasing more than 67,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green power annually, equivalent to 100 percent of the organization’s electricity use.  Varsity is working with Virdao and buying renewable energy certificates (RECs) from Renewable Choice Energy. This is a proactive choice to switch away from traditional sources of electricity generation and support cleaner renewable energy alternatives.

“We are proud to support renewable energy and to recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as a Green Power Partner,” said Patrick Ciccarelli, president of Varsity Technologies. “Purchasing green power to offset 100% of our electricity use makes us more sustainable, while also promoting clean electricity sources like wind and solar. The investment is a sound business decision for companies and non-profits of any size, and it helps reduce climate change.”

Green power is electricity that is generated from environmentally preferable renewable resources, such as wind, solar, geothermal, biogas, biomass, and low-impact hydro. Purchases of green power help accelerate the development of new renewable energy capacity nationwide and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the power sector.

“EPA is excited to welcome Varsity Technologies as a Green Power Partner and applauds the company’s purchase of green power to meet 100 percent of their electricity use and its support of the voluntary renewable energy market,” said Blaine Collison, director of EPA’s Green Power Partnership. “Varsity Technologies is helping to reduce harmful air pollution and demonstrating that using green power is smart for the environment and for business.”

According to the U.S. EPA, Varsity’s green power purchase of more than 67,000 kWh is equivalent to avoiding almost 50 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Varsity’s purchase of RECs demonstrates the company’s commitment to a sustainable and cool world, and complements the company’s existing green operational strategies.  For example, the company also operates a green office by virtualizing its IT servers, uses Energy Star compliant desktops and laptops, reduces lighting and energy usage, is paperless whenever possible, purchases recycled materials, provides a City Car Share option for work-related travel, and encourages employees to utilize teleworking capabilities on a consistent basis.

Varsity worked with Virdao to acquire the renewable energy and expand its environmental sustainability program. “We are honored to work with Varsity Technologies to improve the environment and connect this renewable energy partnership with the EPA,” said Eric Taylor, principal of Virdao.
